"Peace and justice are two sides of the same coin."
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Criminal Law Experience
Scott is a Deputy District Attorney assigned to the Major Violators Unit in the Washoe County District Attorneys Office..
* This unit generally prosecutes the most serious criminals in our community.
* Scott currently handles all of the State cases from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and other cases which carry a possible life sentence.
In over eleven years with the DA's office Scott has prosecuted thousands of criminals who have victimized Reno citizens including murderers, rapists, arsonists, thieves, drug dealers and gang members.
* In each of those cases Scott has represented the interests of all of the citizens of Washoe County to insure "justice is done".
In his career at the DA's office Scott has:
* obtained judgments for millions of dollars in restitution to local businesses and citizens which have been victims of crimes,
* largely dismantled a criminal gang in a three year murder prosecution,
* help rid a local park of drug dealers by assisting in the months long investigation and leading the prosecution with Federal and local law enforcement,
* fought tirelessly against unethical public defenders and court appointed attorneys who violate the rules of evidence, professional responsibility and criminal procedure and needlessly waste the taxpayers money on frivolous litigation.
Civil Law Experience
Scott reviewed complex civil litigation as well as appeals from civil cases decided in Reno Justice Court when he worked for the Washoe County District Court in 1996, 1998 and 1999 as an extern and then law clerk to the Honorable Janet J. Berry. Scott also worked on complex civil cases at a leading local law firm in 1997 as a summer associate. Additionally, at the University of Utah College of Law Scott focused on civil law and was a William H. Leary Scholar ("students whose grades place them in the top 20 percent of their class") and William Hilton Waggoner Scholarship recipient.
Judicial Branch Experience
Scott worked for the honorable Janet J. Berry, Washoe County District Court Judge, Department 1 in 1996, 1998 and 1999 as an extern and then Law Clerk. Scott researched and reviewed well over 100 cases including complex civil cases, both criminal and civil appeals from Reno Justice Court and criminal cases including death penalty litigation. Scott worked directly with the Judge virtually every court day and learned firsthand the work and temperament required to be a great judge.
A Difference in Experience
Each of the candidates in this race has between 12-19 years of experience after passing the bar in the State of Nevada. What they have chosen as their calling, how well they have performed their job and their integrity and reputation is what separates them. Scott is the only candidate who has dedicated his entire career to seeking justice and keeping the peace for the citizens of this community. Scott's opponent has chosen to spend the past 14 years working primarily as a criminal defense attorney representing and advocating for the criminal defendants, the last eleven years as a public defender. Scott has spent every day of his career deciding what was best for the community, not just the criminal. Scott is also the only candidate who has reached a level of distinction at the DA's office and only Scott's judgment is endorsed by the leaders of each side of the courtroom. “You are your choices.” - Seneca
A Distinguished Career
Scott has not simply worked in the District Attorneys office, he has had a distinguished career as a prosecutor. In over eleven years at the DA’s office Scott has prosecuted every type of case including murder, rape, arson and multi-million dollar thefts.
After less than a year prosecuting misdemeanors Scott was chosen for a felony team. Later Scott was selected to a small group of prosecutors who handle all of the murder cases in the community. Scott is now assigned to the Major Violators Unit. This unit prosecutes the most serious criminals in Washoe County.
Scott currently prosecutes all of the major drug trafficking organizations operating in and through Washoe County for the DA's Office. He works closely with each of the area drug task forces and has an office at the Drug Enforcement Administration to coordinate the prosecution of DEA cases in our local courts. Scott is also the only deputy district attorney on call everyday at all hours to advise and assist the major drug task forces.
