Veteran prosecutor, 3 defense lawyers running for Reno justice of the peace
A veteran prosecutor is one of four lawyers vying for the six-year term of justice of the peace in Dept. 4 of Reno Justice Court.
Scott Pearson is the sole prosecutor running for the seat held by Judge Harold Albright, who is retiring. His opponents are Cotter Conway, Washoe County alternative public defender; Eric Nickel, deputy public defender, and Lewis S. Taitel, a private civil and defense attorney.
The primary election is June 8.
Pearson has been in the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office for more than 10 years, and is currently assigned to the Major Violators Unit, concentrating on prosecuting major drug traffickers. He has handled crimes from misdemeanors to multiple defendant murders, and has argued thousands of cases in Reno Justice Court.
“I have dedicated my entire career to seeking justice and preserving the peace of this community,” said Pearson, who has lived in Reno since he was 7, and University of Nevada, Reno graduate.
Pearson said his academic and personal background in business will also help him on the bench. Besides earning top grades in the UNR business college and being a member of business honor societies, members of Pearson’s family are business owners. He attended University of Utah, College of Law.
Outside of his legal work, Pearson is a coach for his two sons’ athletic teams.

Deputy District Attorney Scott Pearson Announces Candidacy for Justice of the Peace
(Reno, NV)- Washoe County Deputy District Attorney Scott Pearson announced today his candidacy for the Justice of the Peace position being vacated by the retirement of the Honorable Harold Albright. Pearson has been a prosecutor in the Washoe County DA's office for over ten years and is currently assigned to the Major Violators Unit. "I have dedicated my entire career to seeking justice and preserving the peace of this community," Pearson said. Pearson will be opposed by three attorneys from the other side of the courtroom. Two of his opponents come from full time public defender positions and the third has a part time contract with the City of Reno providing indigent criminal defense.
Pearson was raised locally after his family moved to Reno when he was seven. He attended local schools before entering the University of Nevada. At Nevada Pearson was active in intercollegiate sports while making the Dean's List of the College of Business and obtaining admission into several honor societies including Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business student honor society. Pearson also worked as a teachers assistant for Economics Professor Robert Metts and accompanied him to Kenya where Metts works for the United Nations Development Program. Pearson has worked for local businesses, is married to a small business owner and is the son of two small business owners. "My business background and experience has prepared me to handle the various types of business related lawsuits routinely filed in our justice courts," Pearson said.
After obtaining a degree in Economics with distinction from Nevada Pearson received a WICHE grant to attended the University of Utah College of Law where he became a Leary Scholar. Mills Lane, a fellow University of Utah College of Law graduate gave Pearson his first opportunity in the judicial system. "Judge Lane was kind enough to arrange a position for me as a judicial intern my first year of law school. My experience working in our local courts that summer planted the seed for my decision today."
Following his second year of law school Pearson worked as a summer associate at the law firm of McDonald Carano Wilson and after graduating from the College of Law he served as the law clerk for the Honorable Janet J. Berry of the Second Judicial District Court. "My year with Judge Berry was an invaluable experience. I was able to observe and assist the Judge on virtually every case before the Court including complex civil litigation and a capital murder case. I learned first hand the patience and temperament demanded by the position and the qualifications necessary for a fair and just judge."
During his clerkship with Judge Berry Pearson accepted a position as a deputy district attorney where he serves today. During his tenure at the District Attorney's office Pearson has handled virtually every crime from misdemeanors to multiple defendant murders. Pearson estimates during that time he has successfully handled nearly three thousand cases in justice court.
In his current assignment on the DA's Major Violator Unit Pearson is responsible for prosecuting all major cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine trafficking organizations for the office, working closely with Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies. Pearson is also a regular instructor at the regional police academies on various topics including the Nevada legal system and Federal and Nevada constitutional law. Pearson says the justices of the peace must have a superior understanding of these constitutional provisions as "they are contacted at all hours of the day when law enforcement is applying for a search warrant and it is imperative the judge is prepared to make the appropriate decision that moment."
Pearson remains active in sports coaching his two sons in the Reno Continental Little League, Great Basin Youth Soccer League and the Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program. "My wife and I were raised in this community and it gives me great pride to serve the people of Washoe County in my current position at the District Attorney's Office. I now hope I will have the opportunity to use my broad experience and knowledge to serve as justice of the peace in department four of the Reno Justice Court."
Current Washoe County District Attorney Richard Gammick as well as former District Attorney Calvin Dunlap have endorsed Pearson's campaign for justice of the peace. The list of community leaders endorsing Pearson also includes Washoe County Sherriff Mike Haley and Mayor Robert Cashell.
